The Fauske VSP is a laboratory tool which allows a hazards assessor to collect precise ‘off-normal’ process design data.Using the VSP calorimeter, experiments can be performed to model upset scenarios such as loss of cooling, loss of stirring, mischarge of reagents, mass-loaded upset, batch contamination and fire exposure heating. As these experiments are performed prior to taking a chemical process from the small lab scale onto the pilot plant and manufacturing scales, the data needs to replicate the cooling properties of a large scale vessel. This is achieved by the calorimeter being centered around a 120ml thin walled metal test…

Drinking water is the world‘s most important resource and most consumed food. Quality control for drinking water is regulated by international and national regulations and norms. For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released the Method 200.8 which specifies criteria for the determination of trace elements in waters and wastes by ICP-MS. The analyses are carried out in order to guarantee safe products free from toxic contaminations. Almost all analyses offered by contract labs follow regulations and standards in order to harmonize the measurement procedures. For those labs requiring high sample throughput each day, not only accuracy, precision…

Raw material identification or verification (of the packaging label) is a common quality-control practice. In the pharmaceutical industry, the increasing global footprint of the supply chain and public health concerns1 resulting from contaminated materials (or mislabeling) have driven many regulatory bodies to require inspection of every barrel in every shipment of materials used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical drugs. Handheld analytical instruments are becoming more common for rapid and non-destructive testing of incoming raw materials directly in warehouses, reducing the cost and time needed for taking samples to the laboratory and quarantining incoming shipments until lab testing is complete.
To use X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) quantitatively, the analytical system must be calibrated. The usual procedure begins with the purchase of reference materials as powders. These samples are prepared as, e.g., fusion beads, they are measured as calibration standards and, finally, calibration and validation are conducted. Depending on the user’s experience level, the entire method development procedure is more or less cost and time intensive. FLUXANA has spent a great deal of time with the task of reducing these costs and, thus, also the development time for the user. The results are “ready-to-go” calibration sets for various industries that have…
